Are Traditional Careers Part of the History Books?

There is a strong case to say the traditional career path is a thing of the past. The nature of work is changing, many people are pursuing alternative career paths or have side hustles as legitimate businesses rather than hobbies.

The Career Escalator

The traditional career path looked something like an escalator. Wait for your turn to get on at the bottom, work hard and make your boss look good and probably advance steadily upwards and then when nearing the top, there should be room as other people got off.

These days things aren’t so predictable. Getting on at the start is a bit messier, traditional progression is much more uncertain as jobs change quickly and, because we are not saving in the same way our parents did, the top of the escalator is more congested as people stay in senior roles longer.

Agile Careers

The modern job market is more dynamic and fluid than it has been in the past and this is rapidly becoming normal. If people don’t like where they work they may make a change rather than put up with a job which is unfulfilling. Being in the best frame of mind will help when making these decisions.

In addition many people are pursuing alternative paths such as freelance work, entrepreneurship, or portfolio careers. These alternative career paths may involve working for multiple employers or clients, or building a business from the ground.

Employers may not like the uncertainty but the ones who adapt fastest and with credibility will win. Equally, students who have developed agile thinking and broader skills and experience will move themselves to the front of the pack.

Why should I care?

If you are just starting out studying the thought of a career choice might seem some way off. However, given the fluid nature of work you might instead think a bit sooner about developing valuable skills (eg Mindset development/resilience skills/communication) or trying some different options whether starting a small project yourself or helping others through volunteering.
